I took a little trip to New York last month and just finished a mixed paper journal that holds all of my pictures, tickets, brochures, and other mementos. Here is the finished product:

If you want to make your own to celebrate a recent trip or other special event, follow these simple steps.
Step #1: Collect tickets / brochures / postcards / other paper along the way.
I saved everything that I came upon while I was away, include stuff that's free (ticket stubs, pamphlets) and stuff that I bought (postcards, maps). I would rather have too much to work with rather than wish I had saved a certain little piece of paper.

Before I left for my trip, I put an envelope like this in my purse to hold all of the paper I accumulated along the way. If you use a purse that's slightly large like me, it fits easily and keeps your paper from getting lost or damaged. Every time you are handed a piece of paper, just slip it in and don't think about it until you get home.
Step #2: Document your trip on a variety of mixed papers.
I included little bits of information on the sights we visited, as well as other vintage papers relating to New York including a page from an old dictionary and atlas. You could plan ahead and bring the blank pages with you to fill out as your trip goes on so you don't forget any important details. I wasn't that organized, so I filled mine in once I returned from the trip.
Step #3: Label your photos.

I view these mixed paper journals as somewhere in between a plain photo album and an all out scrapbook. I like to add a little something extra without going over the top. I used a lot of labels and tags on my photos, as well as simple alphabet stickers. I also kept plenty of photos plain - probably around 1/3 with labels and 2/3 without.
You might notice I used both landscape and portrait style photos. I also used a mixture of color and black and white photos. The idea behind these mixed paper journals is to gather your memories in a fun and easy going manner. No need to be strict about which photos you can and cannot include.
Step #4: Combine your travel ephemera, mixed papers, and pictures.

I combined mine in chronological order. It makes the most sense to me and easy to flip through and remember the trip. However, it's up to you how you want to put yours together.
You're done!!
A few extra notes: For the cover I created a collage in
Picasa, a free photo editing program from Google. I uploaded and printed it along with my other photos.
I usually use two binder rings to hold together my mixed paper journals. I added an extra ring for this one simply due to its size. It's packed full with over 40 photos, 20 written pages, and plenty of tickets / maps / brochures / postcards.
It might be a little tough to see, but the journal includes three index tabs which I labeled "1", "2", and "3" to correspond to the first, second, and third day of our trip. This helped to organize my very large journal.
Wow, this book is fabulous! Thanks for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing! I recently took a trip to NYC myself, and was wondering what to do with my million pictures and memorabilia. You're so creative. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteI love the tip about carrying an envelope otherwise I get home from a trip and am searching for all those special little momentos in various parts of my purse and other bags from the trip. Thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteThat is the coolest thing I have seen in a while!
ReplyDeleteLove Love LOVE it!!
ReplyDeleteMini books are great!
Gorgeous :)
Awesome! I love this idea. Can't wait to try it with my next trip.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea and great job! I'm going to NYC next week. I'll have to keep this in mind.
ReplyDeletesuch a great idea! i love it!
ReplyDeleteOH! I love this idea *SO* much and your book is beautiful! I notoriously keep ticket stubs etc but they end up in a box or a drawer. This is definitely a post I'm going to come back to when winter rolls around and I need a project :)
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous! Nice job.
ReplyDeleteVery cool! I went to NYC a couple of years ago and I still haven't scrapbooked it yet, lol. I'll keep this in mind!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE this. Such an easy and adorable way to scrapbook.
ReplyDeletethanks for sharing - so love this idea.

i couldn't help but leave a comment.
really cool and well organized.
This is just adorable. Its whimsical and fun...great keepsake.
ReplyDeletethis is the MOST AMAZING THING I've ever seen in the scrapbooking realm. I've been having all the pictures and memorabilia from a trip we took back in 2006 just sitting in a scrapbook waiting for the HOURS UPON HOURS it will take to make an entire scrapbook when all I have to do is combine it this way. GENIUS! you have no idea how this just made my day!
ReplyDeleteHi. This book is so amazing. I was wondering what you use for your covers on your scrapbook/journal?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Found this on Pinterest. This. Is. Awesome. I may have to take a trip just so I can do this. Thank you for sharing it.
ReplyDeleteWendy
Great idea!!! I love it.

We went to NYC in Feb for our honeymoon. I love what you've done with all your mementos here. Fabulous!
ReplyDeleteAwesome travel scrapbook!
ReplyDeleteI love it, great idea! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea - love the idea of carrying an envelope to put all the bits in! Going to NY in October and will try and do something similar. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI collect all sorts of stuff on our trips, but never know what to do with them...thanks for this idea, I love it! :)
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get your index cards from for this size mini book.. I am having trouble finding some...
ReplyDeletewhat size did you make this???
ReplyDeleteWhat size is this book? I LOVE IT!
ReplyDeleteWonderful idea! Perfect when you don't want to create a "traditional" kind of album! I must try this :) Thanks for sharing this idea!
ReplyDeleteWOW!! Found this on Pinterest and LOVE this idea! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI LOVED this! I might have to still it for my big Europe trip in December.

LOVE THIS! Thank you for posting.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea. I'm going to try it using Christmas pictures mixed with photo cards received. I thought the cover could be our Christmas card/newsletter and I could use scraps of our wrapping paper from the year, name tags on the gifts, and lists of the gifts I bought that I kept in my purse while shopping. We'll see how it turns out!
ReplyDeleteI love it only thing is each picture laminated or anything to keep from ripping from rings. From so much looking at them.
ReplyDeleteWonderful ideas! I am going to NYC for the first time this March, and I am definitely using your ideas for my mini-album!! Thanks a ton, and I am pinning your album onto my 'Memory Keeping' board on Pinterest!
ReplyDeleteThis is pretty neat! I have a bin full of scrapbook stuff that needs to be put together maybe I can do them in this manner.
ReplyDeleteI also have the same question, about the actual photos. Did you laminate them, glue the photos ok cardstock, glue the photos on cardboard, or just used regular photos? Also what size are your photos and book? Is it 4x6 with the 3 rings?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Just found this on Pinterest, and I love it! We are going to Disney for Spring Break and I am going to action this "scrapbook", so I'll start planning now! I have the same question as Anonymous above, what is the actual size of your book? Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteLove this, simple & easy means it will get done.
ReplyDeleteThat is so cool! I love the modern feel to this NY Scrapbook! I saved lots of paper stuff from my last visit to Ca. just for a scrapbook idea too!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea.
ReplyDeleteVintagehoneybee.blogspot.com
This is fantastic! I save all of this stuff, but never know how to work it into my scrapbook. You've just given me ideas!
ReplyDeleteThank you - I am just about to embark on the mammoth task of sorting out my photos and stuff I have collected from my trips over the years. This is brilliant. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea!! I live in FL and want to take several trips and be a tourist in my home state... Great way to capture the memories!!
ReplyDeleteVery, Very cool! Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWhat size are your pictures? 5x7?
ReplyDeleteThis is also a good alternative to binders for organizing paperwork like warranties and manuals etc. This way no money spent on binders, and likley makes use of stiff alread hoarded ooopppppssss I meant to say treasured:):)
ReplyDeleteReally love this idea! Very simple and fun.
ReplyDeleteWhat size is this???
ReplyDeleteDid you punch the hole individually, and if so how did you get them all to line up so perfectly?! Would they punch holes through all of it together at Staples or something?
ReplyDeleteLovely! I have a bunch of those papers I was about to throw out. Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic idea! We travel for weeks every summer and it is so hard for me to put together an album. I will definitly be using this in July.
ReplyDeleteHi! I've just found this through Pinterest, and I love your idea! I need some photo-cleaning so I'm going to do somenthing like this! =)
ReplyDeleteI never thought of this kind o project before. A new one I will definitely consider in an aim to preserve my trip photos. thanks for the idea!!! i love this!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea for keeping all your travel photos and paraphanalia together. Hint: Take a picture of all of the souvenirs you brought back and include it in the album. Lay the souvenirs out in a pleasing manner for one total picture. That way you'll always know that little pottery piece on your shelf came from Mexico, and from which trip. Tip from Best Beach Destinations website.
ReplyDeletehow did you make the individual letters for the labeling?
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a scrap-pile instead of a scrapbook
ReplyDeleteLove! I've been scrapping for awhile and this is awesome
ReplyDeleteLove the idea of this, but i would have a hard time punching holes all through my precious mementos. : (
ReplyDeleteIf you do them on a normal sized piece of paper you can stick them in clear covers (plastic protecting slips) that already have holes in the side for binders.
DeleteGreat Idea, just loved this, this is an awesome idea, can't wait for my next getaway to try this out
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous idea. What a great way to scrap and not have to worry about what embellishments you are going to put on this and that. You have started a new way of scrapbooking. WHOOO HOOOO ! You go Girl Boy
ReplyDeleteI like it, but I don't want to put holes through all my things? Any way to do this without making holes in all my stuff?
ReplyDeleteTry using 8 1/2" x 11" or 12" x 12" page protectors. Usually they are already punched for the rings and your treasures won't be damaged. Have fun!
DeleteReally love this idea! I found this through pinterest...I have photo's printed out and love to scrapbook but have not had the time to do it in the last few years. This is an easy creative way to show off a themed book! I am gonna do one of these!!! I save everything too! Great way to see it all!
ReplyDeleteIt`s a gorgeous scrapbook!!!
ReplyDeleteAre the photos mounted on cardstock or just put in as is...
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! I love scrapbooking too, but this looks like so much fun!
ReplyDeleteYikes! If yours is for a three day trip, how large will mine be for a 3 month trip to Alaska?
ReplyDeleteSuch a great idea! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI just came back from New York and collected a bunch of things! I want to do a mini album and this is perfect! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI do this with birthday cards too! it's a great idea and so practical! loved how you labeled each photo!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is great! Do you have a hole punch that you recommend? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. I really don't want to spend the time on an elaborate scrapbook but would like to organize my vacation pictures and memorabilia. This is absolutely perfect for me. Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeletehi , love this idea. wish i had seen it years ago. did you place photos and memoribilia on cardstock to give extra support or did you just punch and put in?
ReplyDeleteI wanted to say thanks for sharing! What a great idea! I find myself being too picky about each page but your book shows how much fun you had creating it and looks wonderful all put together!
ReplyDeleteabsolutely love! i am going to do this for sure!
ReplyDeleteI will steal this idea for my trip to paris in november, LOVE it!!!!
ReplyDeleteI have pre sorted and stored my trips into the magic brown envelopes- now I have your brilliant way to scrapbok them ! THANKS
ReplyDeleteThat was a really awesome idea! I wish I would have remembered to write down my daily adventures of when my husband and I went on our honeymoon last year. (We just celebrated our one year anniversary!) Somehow I haven't gotten around to scrap booking the honeymoon like I wanted and now I can't remember what we did on what day. =[ I will try to put them together as close to chronological order as I can remember.... anyway, I love your adventure book! I will definitely be giving it a try. It's a good excuse to take a trip somewhere! =]
ReplyDeleteDid you email or text anyone while you were on your trip? or take photos? Each of those will have dates associated automatically in the files or EXIF info so you can 're-create' your timeline on your trip. Sometimes just a banal email or text will trigger a memory of where you were when you wrote it or answered it, etc..
DeleteWe travel for several weeks/months at a time. So, I scrapbook my photos. I also use a journal and write what we did for the day,how far we had traveled, gas prices, lodging, what the temperature was there and what the temperature was at home. I also add photos, it's almost scrapbooking my journal. So, much fun.
ReplyDeleteBest pictures are the local POSTCARDS of the things you see. Write your journal on them and mail them 'HOME' to your address. That gives the posting date, where you are, and all the happenings on your travel. Those picking up your mail can enjoy seeing them and you have them to add to your album.
DeleteThat's a great idea!
DeleteCan't say enough about your idea ... and your scrapbook journal. I plan to use this next year as a story for me to reflect on that has to do with my grandchildren. I am going to try to make a scrapbook on the different things that we do together, pictures, etc. Thank you. Hugs, Sue
ReplyDeleteOMG. I absolutely love this idea. I looks so personal and it's something you can flip thru a million times and never tire of your great vacation! Thank you so much for sharing
ReplyDeletei was just wondering what kind of paper you used to write all your notes on and how you got the holes to line up perfectly this is the most amazing idea i have ever seen and me and my bf are planning a trip to nyc for a week after christmas and i am so excited to use this idea
ReplyDeleteI was also wondering the size of the paper that is used? This is a great idea! Such a nice way of conserving the memories, and you can display it perfectly on your coffee table.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this album! I have now completed my travel album based on your ideas!

Just came across this journal, you have done such a good job with it! Can't wait until I visit New York!
ReplyDeleteSmartest thing I have seen in a long time.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun way to relive your vacation.
A basket of these would be so cool in a family room!
I love this idea! I just wish I saw it before we went to New Orleans a few weeks ago! However, we plan to go back for our anniversary in February and I will definately repin this!
ReplyDeleteLove this idea! I was just sorting through my various stubs and tickets from 2012...
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this is a great way to include all your collections of a trip. Quick and easy!
ReplyDeleteThis is sooo beautiful. Love the idea, I'm def gonna use it. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI was just wondering if you used regular 4x6 pictures or if you did something else?
ReplyDeleteLove it!
ReplyDeleteThis is so nice and so simple to do! Thanks for the idea. I've been to Thailand for the last 2 yrs. My brother lives over there now and I've been able to spend my very first Nephew's 1st and 2nd BD with him :) and have taken a lot! of pictures. I have them mostly online and am looking to get some on canvas (Canvaspeople.com always has great deals!) Right now my papers, ticket stubs and notes (I write daily what I/we did that day and where we went so I can remember years later) are all in my 'travel box'. If you don't want to put holes in your things, consider doing something similar using photo boxes. You did a lot in 3 days!
ReplyDeleteWhat are the dimensions of the book? Just curious. It looks great btw! Such a fun way to scrapbook!
ReplyDeleteLove it!
ReplyDeleteIt's a great idea. And so simple to make. Congratulation.
You can make a new album when you come to Brazil.

ReplyDeletelove it.
ReplyDeletehow do you put the binder rings ?
That is great , I wish I had started that years ago instead of just photo albums.
ReplyDeleteLOVE THIS. what did you use to punch the holes to make sure they're even throughout the whole book. also, did you put the photos on cardstock or anything to make it tougher?
ReplyDeleteWhat size and where do you print your photos?
ReplyDeleteI love you!!!! Hahaha... I have been three times in two years in L.A, and I have collected a lot of stuff like that. I think that a subway tickets or pamphlets are the best free souvenirs! Know I now how to mix everything in a beautiful scrapbook! Thank you!!

ReplyDeleteWhat a cool idea! Love it!
ReplyDeleteIt's like your HomeMade "SMASH" book! I bought one at the store, but you have made your own. Pretty cool!
ReplyDeleteI use ideas quite similar to this. However, I made up a page for each day: notes, date and day of week, area of travel, sights seen, unusual or interesting things I want to remember. Print out pages at home, put in 3 ring binder. Put these blank pages in a 3 ring binder; jot notes each day. Or if walking around the city, put your mementos in the envelope and make notes in your book at day's end. I put pictures in acid free clear plastic holders and add notes, brochures (in an 8 1/2 X 11 page protector), mementos, etc. When trip is over and everything is compiled, put all in a 3 ring binder. I did this for a 30 day trip to the west coast last summer.
ReplyDeleteI'm not that good at arranging photos and making pretty collages so I always get frustrated after I gather all these papers, post cards, pictures from traveling. This is a great idea! will try!
